MAUREEN WALKER  AFCA

Maureen Walker is an award winning contemporary painter who was art educated in the U.K., gaining her teaching certificate and acquiring her knowledge of art history, theatre design, print making and oil painting. After college, acrylic on board became her medium of choice. Later, when she met the President of the International Guild of Silk Painters and attended her silk painting courses, Walker was immediately attracted by the challenges of this traditional fine art medium. Now, after years of experimentation and exploration, she uses dye on silk in conjunction with acrylic on a substrate of cotton canvas.
In 1998 she relocated to Vancouver Island B.C. where she opened her first Canadian studio. In 2001 she became an Active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and was awarded her AFCA Signature status in 2005. During the past decade she has had two solo shows of her paintings, four two-person shows and has taken part in numerous juried and invitational group shows in Canada, the U.K. and the U.S. Currently she is represented by the Sooke Harbour House Gallery.

In Qualicum Beach B.C. she painted, taught and mentored at The Old School House Arts Centre for five years as a resident artist. Silk painting classes were also held regularly at her own studio and in 2000 she founded an art group, the Silk Worm Club, which is still in existence and holds an annual show of the club members’ silk paintings. She has been teaching workshops in silk painting, composition and abstraction at various locations on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands since 1999.
